Dear Fellow Enthusiasts,

Do you have Spring fever? I do. This time last year we were dealing with family loss, so the year slipped by without fun yard activities. This year we're performing landscaping and gardening (as time permits), and the rewards are wonderful.

In the North we planted blue bearded irises that bloom in the spring and fall, a contorted filter, and white lilacs. North represents water (colors blue and black, and wavy plants), and since it is fed by metal-white and metal elements help.

In the Northeast we planted red and pink-flowering rhododendrons; white, yellow, and pink freesia bulbs; and red and pink peonies. Rhododendrons are of the evergreen family and are good chi; so are bulbs. Peony is considered a very auspicious (good) plant whose chi is love and abundance. NE, of course, is an earth sector. Earth is represented by the colors tan, yellow, and brown (freesia), and is fed by fire (red, pink, and purple).

The "mountain" we have in back is a hill that we plan to keep all-natural. We planted flowers (colors and/or shapes according to the direction they represent) that attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. Good chi (energy) ensures that nature is provided for, and a creature sanctuary compliments our commitment to Mother Earth.

A key to landscaping is to do as much as you're comfortable with (meaning maintenance). It's not good chi when there's more than one (person or family) can handle and things go unattended. Feng Shui is about creating harmony, not stress. Thus (due to our schedules), we use perennials and easy-care plants and ground cover.

There's lots more (like our garden, but I'll save that for another time), and for now I wanted to give you ideas to feed your soul (sight, smell, sound, etc.), help our planet, and honor cohabitants. Enjoy!
