The Harvest

We're moving from late summer (the earth element and Kun trigram) to autumn (soft metal and Tui trigram). Earth is associated with ripening, people, and relationships. Metal is associated with the harvest and organization. Children return to school; and we're gearing up for elections, a change of season, and the holidays. Fall is my favorite time of year. Mother Earth offers her abundant gifts for our senses, before we enter early winter (hard metal and Chien trigram) then winter (the water element and Kan trigram) and the time of regeneration.

So between the high activity of summer and lower activity of winter, is a time of harvest; whether that's preparing our internal space (body), living space (home), living environment (yard), or other space (as an example your auto). Harvest can be defined as consequences of previous action or behavior.

It's fun to watch the animals. Alvin (a chipmunk that dwells near our back patio) is busy storing food. We had three deer visit for a while during dusk, then continue on their path. What a treat! Birds have migrated, and our pet's fur is thickening. Animals adjust much better than we do to seasonal changes. We can learn so much just by observing them.

Health is something we shouldn't ignore. If we aren't healthy, not much else matters. Have you had a physical this year? If you're prone to colds, allergies, or are a smoker…2005 may be a difficult year.

For your home, change filters and batteries, and address drafty windows and outlets. Start now to prepare for the holidays so they are an expression of joy, rather than the complex season of expectation we've made them to be. Simplify! Prepare your yard and garden for winter. Ensure your auto is serviced and winterized.

And there's another harvest that I'm learning so many ignore. Do you have a will? What about an inventory (or at least a videotape) of your assets? Everyone would do well to address these, regardless of how little or how much you've accumulated.

This year the four star returned to the SE. Four represents the element of wind—four hurricanes in the SE. Stars travel from year to year, so anticipating good times as well as not-so-good times is a lesson we can learn from our furry friends. Harvest means preparation. It's a choice between scarcity and generosity. Live in scarcity, and one attracts scarcity. Live in generosity, and one attracts generosity. Make your harvest a great one!

Question of the Month

Question of the month: "My dog was injured so I took him to the vet. He's in pain. Can Feng Shui help?" Theresa from Dublin

Yes, based on the dog's birth date he's an earth element. Healing colors for him are yellow, tan, and brown. While some might recommend fire colors (fire feeds earth), we know that red raises the blood pressure. This wouldn't help pain. In addition, he's a Kun trigram which means he's a West-group type. His good directions are SW, NW, NE, or West. These directions in the home will help him to heal (avoid if there's a two or five flying star in that section). Also check your NE section of the house (represents joints and limbs) to see if the remedy your house needs has been accidentally overpowered (example, if metal was needed too much water would reduce it).

Tip of the Month

The size of a desk (or study/homework area) should be proportionate to the person's needs…not too large (implies not enough to do and easy to be distracted) and not too small (implies overload). Instead of a pile of books and paper heaped up to remind us of all that needs to be done, just display what needs to be worked on for the assignment at hand. The space should be clutter free.

Honoring Ourselves and Others

A testimony: "When I contacted you, I was on my second realtor. My house had been for sale for 4 months. After our walk thru of my empty house you came back and we went thru a space clearing. I followed your suggestions. Part of the problem was an addition that I did not have any information on (when it was built).

In your written report, you stated to allow 3 months for the changes to go into effect. That is when I received my offer--exactly 3 months after putting your suggestions into effect. I received over 2x what I paid for the house. And I sold it to a man named Fate!" Prudence Dewey

Quotes and affirmations: "From the moment we cease trying to swim upstream and begin to flow with the current, something changes within us." Arthur Sokoloff.

For those of you who celebrated or will celebrate birthdays or special occasions, best wishes to you!

Resource Recommendations

Each morning at the Feng Shui conference we started with an opening ceremony. As a voice read "Your Creation," I couldn't hold back the tears as I thought of those who have become part of my life. Needless to say I had to meet the man behind the voice and learn more about the poetry.

His name is Leslie Goldman, endearingly called The Enchanted Gardner. When I coach people who are looking for a mate, one of their instructions (when identifying who they want to call into their space) is to avoid packaging (concentrate on the contents of the vessel…not the vessel). Leslie is an example of a perfect being…a soul that's an expression of limitless love, whose body is restricted by crippling arthritis.

Leslie's influence is expressed through poetry and photo images that record the history of peace on earth. He was given a U.N. Peace Medal in 1982 for the work he would do in his life. His mission is growing the Enchanted Garden--a name for our renewed Earth. Following two hip surgeries in 2001-2002, his project getting hip aims to inspire healthcare providers to 'get hip' to being all it can be. His poetry plaques words men need to know and women want to hear are called alimony insurance by doctors, health/nutrition-industry executives, and Feng Shui consultants worldwide.

I bought a poem for not much more than the price of a greeting card, and went back for the whole set. Reading the poems following workshops is a way to honor the divine in each of us. For a sample of his work, view his site or join the enchanted gardener's club.

If you have a book, verse, or music that you'd like to recommend please send me an email. Time permitting, I'll review it and pass along your generosity.
