~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Featured Article: GRATITUDE JOURNALS Being thankful is good for you Thursday, November 22, 2007 By Kelly Lecker The Columbus DispatchDon't feel guilty about the three pieces of pie you're going to eat today. Instead, think about how thankful you are for the food. Write it down, along with other things in
your life that make you grateful. It might just make you a healthier person. Researchers increasingly have started to look into the role that gratitude plays in people's well-being.
They have found that people who spend time thinking about the good things in life tend to have fewer physical symptoms, feel better about their lives overall and are more likely to look forward to the week ahead.
They also sleep better, are more alert and have more enthusiasm. Some counselors tell their patients to take time every day to write down a few things for which they are grateful -- and not just on Thanksgiving. "Maybe a stranger opened a door for you. Or maybe you saw a kitty and it really made you smile," said Diana Garber, who owns Intuitive Concepts in Sunbury, a consulting company
that specializes in feng shui, a Chinese design tradition aimed at putting people in harmony with their surroundings. Those gratitude journals, available online along with how-to books, are becoming a popular
self-help tool. Oprah Winfrey talked about them on her show. Bloggers around the world are writing about what makes them grateful today. A recent study showed the journals are not just hype.
Research by the University of California-Davis and the University of Miami compared people who kept daily or weekly gratitude journals with those who didn't. It found that not only did the
journal-keepers have a better attitude and more energy, but they were more likely to help other people. Psychologist Jeffrey Froh, an assistant professor at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y.,
studies the effects of gratitude on the well-being of young people. He studied 221 middle-school students. Some were asked to keep gratitude journals, and
others weren't. His research indicated that the students who kept track of what made them thankful had more optimism and life satisfaction and fewer negative feelings.
Garber said her gratitude journal helped her recently when the cat she had for 13 years died. Instead of focusing on the loss, she went back and read entries in her journal from times that
her cat made her happy by sitting at her feet or doing something cute or funny. "It was a tough week," she said. "But happiness isn't something that's out there. It's in here,
in you. There is so much bad news out there, in our face, and it is our responsibility to look for the good things." Garber encourages people to look through their journals when they're having a bad day and
looking for inspiration. She looks forward to the day that her granddaughter can read how much she touched her life.
"Sometimes she does something that just cracks me up," Garber said. "And someday she'll see that she's in the journal."
Kirsten Harrell, a life coach from Dayton, has clients who keep gratitude journals. She keeps one herself and occasionally shares what makes her thankful on her blog.
"People I know who keep them really do find a shift in how they feel," she said. "People say when they do it at night, they sleep better."
Harrell urges people to write three to five things in their journal every day. But she cautioned journal keepers to really think about what makes them grateful.
"It's important to be really sincere about it and not have a standard three items every day," she said. Garber recently decided to give her husband a list of what she appreciated about him. She
told him she was grateful for his patience, humor and imagination, and that she appreciated that he provided a home that encouraged religious freedom.
Her husband keeps the list inside his medicine cabinet so he can see it every day. "That's all anyone wants, to know they made a difference," she said. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Question of the Month For answers to more questions, see Feng Shui Facts and Feng Shui Tips..
Q. Do you have any suggestions on how I might overcome the fear and hopelessness I sometimes feel about the obstacles life throws my way? A.
How does all this relate? Instead of feeling hopeless, take 15 minutes a day and do something kind and generous for another person. It can be as simple as open the phone book
and send a card (even an electronic card) to someone you don't know (let them know your intent so they aren't frightened), take the time to talk with a stranger in the grocery store (and
offer you're favorite, uplifting quote), or drop off a teddy bear at a senior's center. If a fear of it not going well is keeping you from doing something (and this applies to anything),
let me share my definition of failure with you. Failure isn't making mistakes; it's not learning from the experience. Let your imagination guide you as to what you're comfortable with. Ask
them to pay it forward (just like the movie, which means they need to pass along the kindness). Give a gift of love today, and don't expect anything back (or it wouldn't be a gift).
Lastly, as I often suggest, you should be proactive versus reactive! It's a prudent approach to life and the economy. A
consultation with us may benefit you greatly. Remember, Feng Shui
isn't a destination, it's a journey. Some call us their guardian angel because we monitor and advise beyond their expectations. It's fair to say 80% of our business is due to word of mouth.
We're honored and blessed! See our testimonies. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Tip of the Month: December's Energy On December 7, we begin a 1 water
period through January 5, 2008. A 1 month in a two earth year (earth blocks water) implies detachment, female domination, and rushing. In the
height of the holiday season, we recommend to take your time. Drive defensively and allow plenty of time to get where you are going because the energy suggests potential auto accidents.
The monthly Chinese astrology sign of Horse may have more challenges during the month. And, remember all of 2007 (2/4/07 to 2/3/08) is challenging for snakes.
With the holidays upon us, we wanted to take our tips this month one step further. Here are a few things to consider when decorating for the holidays
- The southeast represents wealth. This would be an excellent place for your tree or gifts received. - The southwest represents relationships. Focus on this area to ensure
relationships are happy ones; clear clutter from this area. Clear and arrange furniture to revitalize chi in this area. Also place happy pictures here.
- The east represents our ancestors and family. Place favorite family holiday treasures that have been passed down through generations here; create family
health and peace by placing gifts, plants, pine cones, etc.
Energy Days This Month
- Mercury Retrograde – None for DEC
- Lunar eclipse – None for DEC
- Solar eclipse – None for DEC
- New moon – 12/09 generally good to start new projects
- Full moon – 12/23 generally good to wrap up a project. Not good for surgery or medical procedures due to risk of increased bleeding. Also, bulbs planted during a full moon
produce better results!

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Testimonies, Good News, Quotes and more Dear Diana,
The Columbus Dispatch and the Event Marketing Group would like to thank you for being a part of our 2007 Best of Fall Home Show, presented by Teeters Construction. Your
involvement helped make the event the great success it was, and we greatly appreciate your help. We know that your professional expertise and enthusiasm enriched our guests' show
experience. The many comments we heard during the show and immediately after indicate that the stellar stage talent line-up and strolling performers were a highlight of this year's event.
Thank you, too, for making the planning and operation of the stage and strolling performances so easy for me personally. I enjoyed working with you so much, I didn't even feel like I was
working. I hope that you can say the same, and that the show was a positive experience for you, too. We are already planning a bigger, better show for Fall 2008, and I hope we'll be able to work together again soon.
Again, thank you so much for all you did to make the 2007 BEST of Fall Home Show the best yet. Sincerely, Lisa Reuter Of the Dispatch/Events Team (hand written comment)
